CHIN · ILLUSTRATED 3D RECOVERY
Genioplasty (Setback): before & after and recovery stages
Compare a projecting starting chin with partial backward movement as separate swelling settles.

SUMMARY
What this example shows
A fixed fictional projecting chin is the starting reference. Its lower surface moves partly backward while chin height and width stay fixed. Temporary swelling is separate. The tooth-bearing jaw and lips do not move with this correction; osteotomy, fixation, rotation and sensation are not reconstructed.
STAGE BY STAGE
Genioplasty (Setback) recovery stages
Starting chin contour
The chin starts with fixed fictional extra projection beneath every stage.
This is a fictional starting contour, not a diagnosis of the chosen face.
First few days: Swelling over the moved contour
Temporary chin fullness and color overlap the retained movement.
Genioplasty swelling can be most noticeable around days two to three.
Around 1 month: Direction becoming clearer
A smaller forward projection is visible; chin height and width stay fixed.
Early swelling can improve while subtle fullness remains for months.
Around 6 months: Later surface comparison
The same direction remains with little temporary fullness in this example.
The outer surface does not establish bone union or sensory recovery.
TIMELINE
Day-by-day checkpoints in the 3D model
The simulator interpolates between these authored checkpoints. They describe the illustration, not measured clinical averages.
The chin starts with fixed fictional extra projection beneath every stage.
Temporary fullness overlaps the moved chin contour.
Swelling partly hides the selected direction of movement.
The temporary chin fullness begins to recede.
The changed chin outline becomes easier to distinguish.
Residual fullness overlaps the retained direction.
The same movement remains with less temporary fullness.
Surface settling does not establish bone union or sensory recovery.
INDIVIDUAL DIFFERENCES
How recovery can vary
Timing and response
Only one illustrated direction is applied. Lip and tooth-bearing jaw positions stay fixed; rotations, grafts, internal cuts, fixation and personal movement distances are not reconstructed.
Longer term
The six-month view is an authored comparison point. Bone healing, sensation and symmetry need separate follow-up; the surface does not provide an activity-clearance date.
EVIDENCE NOTES
Sources and limitations
- BAPRAS: Genioplasty movement directions
The genioplasty section distinguishes forward, backward, upward and downward chin movement from movement of the tooth-bearing jaw. Its wider craniofacial recovery discussion is not used to set these dates or offsets.
- BAOMS: Genioplasty
Chin-bone repositioning, swelling most noticeable around days two to three and residual fullness over months.
