Double-Jaw Surgery (Both Jaws Forward): before & after and recovery stages

Compare upper and lower jaws moving forward together through early fullness and a later profile view.

SUMMARY

What this example shows

A fixed fictional retruded upper-and-lower-jaw profile supplies the reference. Upper and lower lip regions and the chin move forward together, with early swelling settling separately. Compare this direction with upper-forward/lower-back surgery. This outer-face example does not reconstruct bone cuts, rotations, dental bite or breathing outcomes.

STAGE BY STAGE

Double-Jaw Surgery (Both Jaws Forward) recovery stages

BEFORE

Before treatment

The unchanged display face provides a reference for this example.

DAY 3

First few days: Fullness obscures the profile

Cheek and lip swelling overlap the illustrated jaw movement.

Initial swelling is often prominent over the first few days.

DAY 14 · 2 WEEKS

Around 2 weeks: Less color, residual fullness

Bruising is lighter, while cheek and lip fullness still hides part of the contour.

Visible color and swelling can settle at different rates.

DAY 42 · 6 WEEKS

Around 6 weeks: Profile easier to compare

Less temporary fullness reveals the retained forward or backward movement.

A clearer outline does not establish normal sensation or bone healing.

DAY 180 · 6 MONTHS

Around 6 months: Later surface comparison

The same illustrated movement remains with little early swelling.

This is a comparison point, not a personal recovery deadline.

TIMELINE

Day-by-day checkpoints in the 3D model

The simulator interpolates between these authored checkpoints. They describe the illustration, not measured clinical averages.

Before treatmentUntreated reference

The unchanged display face provides a reference for this example.

Day 1Early facial fullness

The changed profile is partly hidden by temporary swelling.

Day 2Prominent early swelling

Broad cheek and lip fullness overlaps the jaw movement example.

Day 3First-days comparison

Early swelling still obscures the underlying profile.

Day 7Early settling

Color and fullness start easing at different rates.

Day 14 · 2 weeksColor easing

Less discoloration reveals a profile that still has residual fullness.

Day 28 · 4 weeksResidual fullness

Visible swelling is reduced, while subtle fullness remains.

Day 42 · 6 weeksProfile becoming clearer

The example contour is easier to compare; this does not show bone healing.

Day 90 · 3 monthsSlower soft-tissue settling

A small amount of illustrative fullness remains.

Day 180 · 6 monthsLater profile comparison

This display endpoint does not establish bite, sensation or bone union.

03

INDIVIDUAL DIFFERENCES

How recovery can vary

Timing and response

Both movements share one fictional retruded profile. This differs from upper-forward/lower-back surgery and does not predict rotations, dental alignment or breathing.

Longer term

The MMA source describes overall final condition over nine to twelve months; the six-month picture is an intermediate comparison. Jaw position, bite and sensation need separate follow-up, and this outer surface cannot assess bone union or breathing.

EVIDENCE NOTES

Sources and limitations

  1. Cambridge University Hospitals NHS: Upper-jaw osteotomy

Upper-jaw repositioning, facial swelling strongest around 48 hours, bruising over the first weeks and possible residual swelling for months. These phases do not calibrate the display offsets or dates.

  2. Cambridge University Hospitals NHS: Lower-jaw osteotomy

Lower-jaw repositioning with temporary facial fullness and bruising, limited mouth opening and a separate course for altered sensation. It does not predict a movement distance, bite or breathing outcome.

  3. Mayo Clinic: Maxillomandibular advancement (2018)

Describes repositioning both jaws and variable facial appearance after MMA, with overall final condition over nine to twelve months. Its sleep-apnea outcomes do not calibrate this outer-face example or predict breathing.
